Multimedia artist CHOKRA (شكرا) harnesses music, rhymes, light, pyrotechnics, video, scents, vivid powders, traditional ceremonial practices and attire to present performances full of joy that challenge the status quo. “I am motivated by following the path of joy,” the artist says. “I am interested in art that reflects the time we live in, considers consciousness in [its] entirety and situates the potentialities of the future in a rendition that is unapologetic and unafraid of the repercussions it creates.” The artist lives and works between Paris, France and London, United Kingdom.

CHOKRA has presented work at MoMA (New York), P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center (New York), The Watermill Center (New York), Saatchi Gallery (London), Guggenheim (Bilbao), New Museum (New York), Kumu Art Museum (Tallinn), Kunstmuseum (Basel), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Caixaforum Museum (Madrid), CICA Museum (South Korea), Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Palazzo Morando (Milan), Scope Art (Miami), Art Basel (Switzerland) and numerous renowned museums worldwide.

My pieces emerge from a futuristic re-imagining of the human condition that invite audiences to explore heightened states of awareness. I am interested in the poetics of identity including its cosmetic applications concerning narratives of nationality, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, human/non-human or psychological states.
